The young golfer from Cancelada was proclaimed the winner in the ‘I Torneo de Golf Bodegas Altún’, held last Saturday at Club de Golf El Chaparral.

With a shotgun start at 09:00, the tournament was split into two divisions – both men and ladies – being played under Stableford format in near perfect conditions. Despite this the wind that appeared mid-morning made for some interesting reading later and wrecked several scorecards

All the participants received a ‘goody bag’ from the main sponsor of the day, the winery, ‘Rioja de Bodegas Altún’, containing a wonderful variety of young and vintage bottles which obviously went down well with all.

Rodriguez had to work hard to win with his most immediate challenger, Antonio Outeriño, close on his heels. In third place was Englishman Brian Seville on 34 points who, despite enjoying plenty of local knowledge, slipped away a little on the back nineno se lo puso fácil.

In the second division, the young Russian and member of El Chaparral, Lucy Liudmila, was a clear winner signing off for 37 points; a clear advantage of three points over second-placed Alexander Yoldan, closely followed by San Pedro golfer Antonio Roldán on 33.

In the ladies category Lucy once again triumphed, this time with an even more substantial winning margin: seven points more than England’s Josephine Kelly; and nine more than Spain’s Mª Pilar Valdivia!

During the meal there was a tasting session of wines offered by the enologist from Bodegas Altún, trying out all the different bottles which accompanied the meal. Afterwards, the traditional prize giving and draw was held in the club house.

From El Chaparral we would like to express our thanks to Bodegas Altún, and Antonio Machado y Cornelio in particular, for their collaboration and help in getting this event off the ground and making it into a successful day for all participants.
