Christmas in Malaga

Take some time to get to know the Spanish Christmas traditions during your stay.

Chaparral Golf Club is only half an hour from the city of Malaga. There will be time both to play golf and to visit this beautifully decorated city to learn about its traditions and customs. During the month of December, the locals usually visit one of the many nativity scenes with the Infant Jesus in the cradle. The biggest scenes can be seen in the town hall and in the cathedral and are open from December 1.

On Calle Larios, in the center of Malaga, you can enjoy a spectacular Christmas lighting and music show every evening at 6.30 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. A walk through the historic center and a visit to the traditional Christmas market are other good recommendations for your visit.

Christmas Eve, the families in Spain gather for a great meal and many families visit the church for Christmas Mass. Typical dishes on the Christmas table will include roast lamb or suckling pig, seafood, cheese, ham and pate. Dinner starts late, around 10 pm. and will be enjoyed for hours. While in many parts of Europe, Santa Claus brings gifts on Christmas Eve or early on Christmas Day, in Spain the Three Wise Men come with gifts on January 6.

New Year’s Eve, people in Spain look at the clock tower in the central square of Madrid, the ”Puerta del Sol”, live or on television. In the whole country it´s a tradition to eat twelve grapes: one for each clock hit at midnight for good luck for the new year.

The Three Wise Men. January 6 is the last day of the Christmas holidays. Early in the morning, the children will wake up to find the gifts that the Three Wise Men have left during the night. All the towns prepare their own parades with music and decorated carriages from where the dressed up ”Wise Men” throw toys and sweets to the public. Don´t miss trying the typical dessert ”Roscón de Reyes”.
